Once again, Group of Creatives is honoured to have been the overall Head Producers and Creative Directors for SA Menswear Week. With the astronomical growth of the platform, it was imperative to take the 4 days of shows to new levels over the previous season which took place at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town, South Africa.
With the amount of space needed, and the fact that it had to have a “cool” factor, the limited number of buildings and venues in Cape Town forced our team to be really creative. Eventually we found the perfect space in the form of a concrete “bunker” at the new Cape Town Stadium. We then set about creating the layouts and build / technical lists to ensure it could house the two show spaces and all the necessary hospitality and backstage areas required.
Creating two distinct show spaces was important to facilitate the large range of designers, from new and emerging through to the mega established names. Our main venue (denoted right in drawing) would have white walls and a grey backdrop and traditional overhead trussing with source-four profile lighting. The venue denoted on the right was an edgier, smaller venue, all designed around an angled show-space featuring 4,8m high LED strip walls and panels, with the whole venue done in black, with transparent Ghost chairs.
Over 32 designers showcased in more than 19 runway shows and presentations over 3 days. The full schedule, production, management and delivery of the platform was handled by the GRP/cr8/ team. Due to being new with few sponsors, this was a logistical and planning challenge due to the incredibly tight budget. So when SAMW was rated as the leading fashion week on the continent, both in operation and curation, by WWD, we were incredibly honoured.
